New Features for the Model Year 2021 HPX and XUV Gators

Updates for model year 2021 HPX615, HPX815, XUV560, XUV590, XUV825 S4, XUV855 S4, XUV835, and XUV865 Utility Vehicles target performance, comfort and convenience. John Deere also improved the durability of the transmission and increased ease of use for the operator.

A newly designed transmission built from the ground up with an integrated park feature eliminates the need for a foot- or hand-actuated park brake in full-size, mid-size, and HPX utility vehicles. This makes it faster and easier to park. When taking the vehicle out of park and putting it into gear, little effort is required, even on a hill.

The new four-wheel drive (4WD) engages with a simple flip of a switch on all HPX and XUV models. In downhill scenarios, the front wheels help slow the vehicle down for more control. In addition, common power steering modules provide improved durability and performance.

All models have the updated, next-generation graphics.

Improved Ease of Shifting

  • For most HPX and mid-sized XUVs, the shift pattern for reverse, neutral, high and low is a straight line.
  • On the XUV835 and XUV865 models, a slight jog at the top of the pattern puts it in low.
    • This feature lets operators shift back and forth quickly from low to reverse when high-torque jobs require it (for example, when blading).
  • Shift stops installed behind the dash allow for jobs requiring quick high-to-reverse shifting.

Integrated Park Position in the Transmission

  • Operators can put the Gator utility vehicle in park with the gear shifter, just like an automobile. No more pressing or pulling on a parking brake.
  • Additionally, to shift out of Park (P), turn on the vehicle and press the brake pedal like some cars or trucks.
  • A secondary park brake is also available as an option on select models:
    • HPX615E
    • HPX815E
    • XUV825 S4
    • XUV855 S4
    • XUV835M
    • XUV835R
    • XUV865M
    • XUV865R

New 4WD System

John Deere has implemented a new 4WD system on full-size XUV Utility Vehicles and electronically actuated 4WD and rear differential lock on all HPX and XUV models.

  • The full-size XUV Utility Vehicles received an updated 4WD system, the same system used on the mid-size XUV Utility Vehicles. There is no more on-demand system where the rear wheels must slip before the front wheels receive torque, which eliminates the wedging issues the system sometimes created.
  • An electronic switch engages 4WD and the rear differential lock. There is no mechanical lever on the mid-size XUV.
  • This new system is more intuitive – flip the switch and the front wheels receive torque immediately.
  • When heading downhill with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) engaged, 4WD helps slow the operator down.

  • XUV560 and HPX models now come standard with a basic instrument cluster, providing the following information to the operator:
    • Speed, fuel (HPX only), 4WD indicator, differential lock indicator, gear position, driver seat belt reminder and engine oil temperature
  • XUV590, XUV825M S4, XUV855M S4, XUV835 and XUV865 models receive additional in-dash features:
    • Gear position in orange helps operators see and find the correct gear.
    • An rpm readout and service interval warning light are now in the dash display.
    • Service interval text scrolls at the bottom of the display.

Supervisor mode (speed control [SC]) is a new feature that was previously a dealer-installed speed limiter kit operated by a key in the glove box. Speed control is enabled and disabled on the instrument cluster. The PIN code is controlled by the operator each time it is enabled (27 mph [43.5 km/h] top speed). The code is reset each time the function is disabled. Speed control is standard on the following models:

  • XUV590
  • XUV825 S4
  • XUV835
